BACKGROUND I was born on the North-East coast of Scotland and grew up in the small village of Longside, about 30 miles north of Aberdeen. After finishing secondary school in 1987 I attended Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, where I had to loose my heavy accent in a hurry. After obtaining my honours degree in Computational Physics in 1990, I went to the University of Arizona in Tucson to pursue a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. I will never forget the day I landed there in the summer heat. Four years later I had the necessary piece of paper, and left on an adventure, delaying future career plans for as long as possible. Mounting credit card debt soon forced me to make a living however, and I chanced to take a job part-time teaching at SUNY New Paltz. After one semester I was amazed to find that I had stumbled into a fantastic career which, after several changes of location, I still enjoy immensely at Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Teaching was never a part of my career planning - I expected to continue as a researcher. I have never regretted the decision for a moment, and still get to dabble in a little research here and there. CONTACT John B. Geddes, Ph.D. Last modified: 28 January 2006 |
