INFO FOR 2008: Professor John Geddes has 1 or potentially 2 openings - interested students should contact him as soon as possible.
We are absolutely thrilled to launch the Longterm Undergraduate Research Experience at Olin College, providing first- and second-year students with an amazing opportunity to collaborate on research problems, meet students from other colleges, have fun with fun professors, and get paid while doing it!
With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Olin College will be awarding six fellowships starting in the summer of 2007 as part of the Longterm Undergraduate Research Experience (LURE) Program in the Mathematical Sciences. Selected Olin Fellows will receive support for up to two years to conduct research with Professors Adams and Geddes. Preference will be given to first- and second-year students. Fellows will receive $3500 for a ten week summer program, summer housing, and travel support for related conferences. Students are expected to continue with the research during at least one semester in the academic year following the funded summer, with an option for renewal for a second summer and academic year.
Students will work on problems related to wireless communications with Professor Adams or on problems related to microvascular blood flow with Professor Geddes. More information on these research areas can be found here or by talking with the relevant professor. Both research areas include real-world problems with real applications. The summer program will also include plenty of fun activities and "field trips."
The dates of the program are June 2 - August 1, with a conference (expenses paid) at Central Michigan University from July 27-July 30. This conference will bring together students and faculty mentors from the four LURE colleges: Olin College, University of Richmond, Coppin State University, and Central Michigan University.

The application deadline is Monday, February 11, 2008 at 5pm.
The LURE program is supported by the National Science Foundation under DMS-0636528. |
