Deliverables

This course will be divided into four modules, each with associated deliverables.

The final deliverable for each module will be a 4 page technical paper in IEEE format (templates for word and latex are available at: \\Fsvs01\public\+Courses\BioThermo\paper_templates\).

All work will be done in groups of ~3. Groups will be assigned for the first module.

(information on deliverables will be updated as we go)

Module 1 - Metabolism (theoretical theme)

The goal of this module is for you to become familiar with the First Law of Thermodynamics, enthalpy, calorimetry, specific heat, etc. in the context of the metabolism of the human body.

The assignment for module 1 is here.

Module 2 - Molecular Dynamics for Disease (computational theme)

"Molecular dynamics is all about relationships and trust..." N. Hammond

The goal of this module is for you to become familiar with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, Entropy, Free energy, the Bolzmann Distribution, and the basic uses and assumptions of molecular dynamics (MD) and its appliation to disease.

Module 3 - Phase transitions in cataracts (experimental theme)

The goal of this module is to learn about phase transitions and phase diagrams in the context of cataracts. Experimental work will be based on published work on the calf lens. The assignment is here.

Module 4 - Self-assembly or topic of your choice (choose your theme)

Grading

Deliverables from each module will be worth 22.5% of your grade. The remaining 10% will be at the discretion of the instructors and will be based upon participation, effort, etc.
