In my opinion, there is no single textbook that is perfectly-suited to learning failure analysis. Failure analysis is not a book of already discovered facts; it is a way of thinking, a set of knowledge and skills, and a process of discovery. Of course, solving problems in failure necessitates the application of a wealth of knowledge, and knowing where to find information is critical.

We will be making use of a variety of information resources in this course, including failure analysis case studies, technical journal articles, textbooks, engineering handbooks, standards, web sites, and popular books. In addition, we will make use of people (experts, non-experts, instructors, peers), laboratory instrumentation and testing equipment, and analytical techniques. It is your job to make use of these resources to solve your failure analysis problems.

On this page, I provide links to a variety of information resources. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of failure analysis resources, it is simply a start. My hope is that you will help me identify additional useful resources, and send me links to information that you find helpful.

Note that ASM Handbooks Online is a particularly valuable resource for this course, and I encourage you to explore different volumes of the handbooks as you work through your projects. Some of the volumes that may provide relevant information include:
